Protected Landscape, besides the conservation of the landscape they generate, their tourist interest and their potential therapeutic purposes.
This protected area covers an area of approximately 78 ha and a perimeter of 3,493 m.
It is located to the north of the center of Santa Maria and is totally surrounded by the Reserve
Natural of Costa da Fragate. Although it is in good condition, it is currently not in operation, except for occasional uses for local consumption. The area is smaller than the salt mines in Pedra Lume, but still worth a visit at walking distance.
The preservation of the historic and cultural value of the salt pans is the main.
